At the unit level with 9999 possibilities it is unlikely that there would be many duplicates to where a guy confused his rifle for another and that is assuming that the unit got a entire batch of rifles with concurrent serial numbers. They were probably the only ones who cared anyway.

My math skills are long gone but that's a lot of unique numbers with two alpha prefix characters (60,000)? But if you really didn't want the enemy to know how many rifles you were producing why would you care about uniqueness in numbering in the first place except to make the bean counters and record keepers happy. With four numeric digits you would have to use an alpha prefix to make the numbers unique past 9999 (if that is what they wanted to do). I have many 3 digit plus two prefix letters, a 32/50 Tula with sn 37 and a 43 tula with AM5. Front Page for the Russian Mosin Nagant Forum website. I can't recall any of mine with more than four numeric digits though.

Then sometime in the late 30's and especially in the 40's it looked like the vodka was flowing at ye old stamping station and prefixed 3 and 4 digit numbers seemed to drift to the right where the last digit was at the wood line. Look how long some of the Chinese s/n's were - perfectly legible - 6 digits and I think I have seen 7 digits. In the 20's the s/n's were put on perfectly centered so a five digit number was a no brainer.
